Description
Garden plot in the shape of a human, formed from plywood, styrofoam, aluminum and soil. This temporary sculpture was created by Ursinus College students in linked Art and Biology classes in conjunction with World Soil Day.
Student Statement
This piece depicts the soil challenge of soil erosion from conventional agricultural practices like tillage. Conventional tillage (plowing) harms soils by disrupting fauna, releasing stored carbon, and breaking down soil structure. Over time, this reduces the productivity of the land to the point that it is non-arable. This garden plot in the shape of a human represents the earth and the bounty that it offers humanity. The plow raking through the piece demonstrates the grievous harm that continued use of conventional agricultural practices causes.
