Translation

Johanna Montelius, A legal daughter of Peter Montelius and his legal wife Margretha (born Stitzer) was to the world born Thursday the 14th day of July in the year of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ 1825, at half before 11 o’clock in the evening, in Buffalo Township Union County, in the state of Pennsylvania, and was Wednesday the 3rd of August 1825, through the Holy Baptism of the Trinity of God dedicated, by Johan Georg Heim, Evangelist Lutheran Preacher, in the schoolhouse therein baptized, and with the name Johanna Montelius made an initial member of the Redemption. Baptismal sponsors were: the parents.

Comment

Peter Montelius printed this Taufschein for his daughter Johanna. He and his wife sponsored her baptism, held at the schoolhouse. A number of certificates printed by Montelius exist that were all decorated by the same hand, but it is difficult to know if Daniel Diefenbach who infilled them also decorated them, or if Montelius himself decorated them. Woodcut stamps were used to provide the design patterns.
