Comment
This piece is exemplary of the influence of American and neo-classical designs on Pennsylvania German art. The eagle and shield motif within the imprint circle at the bottom is clearly meant to be patriotic. The woman at the right is dressed in the fashionable high-waisted gown of the late 18th-early 19th century, and she stands by a column and urn, all classical motifs shown here in fraktur. On this piece, the scrivener likely made a mistake and placed the mother’s married name of Hege as her maiden name, which was probably Lerker.
