Description
Human being formed from moss and bark concealing a clay skeleton beneath the soil. This temporary sculpture was created by Ursinus College students in linked Art and Biology classes in conjunction with World Soil Day. This image shows the final stage of the installation.
The sculpture was installed in front of the LOVE statue near Lower Wismer.
Student Statement
The soil 'person' with planted moss and bark represents the environment and nature and is used to illustrate the problems of soil degradation and deforestation. The sculpture is left outdoors for a few weeks to truly deteriorate and face weathering effects, eventually unearthing a clay skeleton. The clay skeleton is used to represent the fragility of the current balance between the environment and humanity. It is especially used to illustrate that when the environment, particularly soil, is not properly taken care of that humans will have a bleak future, and on the extreme end of the spectrum it could lead to the extinction of humans as a species.
