[upper left corner] Dietrich

Comment
The Gombers frequently used red and green dots and slashes to decorate, as seen here in the angels’ gowns. Little is known about this elusive couple who worked in Berks and Lehigh counties. Philip Gomber bought over 1200 printed Taufscheine and house blessings from the Adler store in Reading between 1817-1822. Catharine purchased about 2,300 between 1824-1827, after her husband’s death in 1822. All the certificates they bought were uncolored, and almost all in German. From 1823-1827, Ritter had no partner and ran his Adler store business alone. He switched from using the imprint Johan Ritter and Co. to simply Johan Ritter, as seen here. This is the same edition as PAG1998.195.
