Wann wir kaum geboren werden,/Ist vom ersten Lebenstritt/Bis zum kühlen Grab der Erden,/Nur ein kurzgemeß’ner Schritt./Ach! mit jedem Augenblick/Gehet uns’re Kraft zurück;/Und wir sind mit jedem Jahre,/Alle reif zur Todten=Bahre.

O, wer weiß, in welcher Stunde,/Uns die letzte Stimme weckt;/Denn Gott hat’s mit seinem Munde/Keinem Menschen noch entdeckt./Wer sein Haus nun wohl bestellt,/Geht mit Freuden aus der Welt:/Da die Sicherheit hingegen,/Ewiges Sterben kann erregen.

Den/Ehegatten,/Andreas Buchmann/und seiner Frau Magdalena/eine geborne Leienberger/ ist ein Sohn geboren worden, den 17ten /Decmber im Jahr unsers Herrn, 1825/Dieser Sohn ist geboren in Lecha/Taunschip Northamptn Caunty,/im Staat Pennsylvania,in/Nord=Amerika, ist getauft worden und erhielt den Namen William/den 11ten Tag/February im Jahr/unsers Herrn 1826 von Herrn Becker/ Taufzeugen waren:/William Schumacher, und/Catharina Leienberger/Allentaun, Pa./Gedruckt und zu haben bei A. und W. Blumer/1840.

Obiger William Buchman wurde Conformirt den 13ten März, im Jahr 1842./vom Ehrw. Hrn. Gerhart.

Ich bin getauft ich steh’ im Bunde,/Durch meine Tauf mit meinem Gott!/So sprech ich stets mit frohem Munde,/In Kreuz, in Trübsal, Angst und Noth,/Ich bin getauft des freu ich mich,/Die Freude bleibt mir ewiglich.

When we are just born…

God’s peace be with you and receive you!

To these spouses, Andreas Buchmann and his wife Magdalena a born Leienberger is a son to the world born, the 17th Day of December in the year of our Lord, 1825. This son was born in Lehigh Township, Northampton County in the state of Pennsylvania in North America, and was baptized

and received the name William the 11th day of February in the year 1826 by Mister Becker. The baptismal sponsors were William Schumacher and Catharina Leienberger. Allentown, Pa. Printed and for sale by A. and W. Blumer, 1840.

Above-mentioned William was confirmed the 13th of March in the year 1842 by Reverend Mister Gerhart.

Comment

The inclusion of the bald eagle on this Taufschein demonstrates the importance of nationalist imagery in Pennsylvania German arts. This Taufschein also shows the progression of important dates in its owner’s life: 1825 birth, 1826 baptism, 1842 confirmation. The fraktur was printed in 1840, so it likely was purchased for the child’s confirmation.
