Translation

When we are just born…

Birth and Baptismal Certificate. To both of these spouses Philip Schmitt and his legal wife Catharina born Haaß is a daughter to the world born, the 16th Day of February in the year of our Lord, 18790. This daughter was born in Macungie Township in Northampton County in the state of Pennsylvania in North America, and received through the holy Baptism the name Anna Maria the 8th day of March in the year 18795 by the Reverend Mister Herzel. The baptismal sponsors were Daniel Haas and Regina Walbert both single.

I was baptized, I stand in the union…

I was baptized, if I die immediately…

I was counted among your seed…

Comment

This brightly-colored certificate is exemplary of the bold, splashy style of Rudolph Heinrich Ottomar Grossmann, who often signed his name R.H.O.Grossmann. Grossmann used vivid purples, reds, greens, and yellows in his work and frequently embellished the printed designs by adding crests to birds and encircling figures with dots and dashes. This certificate, despite its late date of printing, was made for someone baptized in 1795. The scrivener neatly crossed out the pre-printed “8” in 18__ and replaced it with a 7. Also it is interesting that the small Bible is open and reads “Holy Bible” despite the fact the certificate is printed in German. This is the same edition as PAG1998.219.
