Wirst du nun nicht neu geboren,/Ach so sieht es Sonnenklar,/Warlich, so gehst du verlohren;/Jesu Wort bleibt ewig wahr./Dieses ist der Weg, die Bahn,/Die dich führet himmelan,/Sonst sind alles falsche Stützen,/Die dich nicht im Tode schützen./Wann wir kaum geboren werden,/Ist von ersten Lebenstritt,/Bis zum kühlen Grab der Erden,/Nur ein kurzgemess’ner Schritt./Ach! mit jedem Augenblick/Gehet uns’re Kraft zurück;/Und wir sind mit jedem Jahre/Allzureif zur Todtenbahre.

Simon Otto 1843/Geburts=und Taufschein./Diesen beyden Ehegatten, als: Peter Otto und seiner ehelichen/Hausfrau Catharina eine geborne Stutzmann/ist ein sohn zur Welt geboren, den 4 Tag/Hornung im Jahr unsers Herrn, 184[3]. Dieser/ ist geboren in untermahhantango in Taunschip/Schulkill Caunty, im Staate Pensilvana/in Nord=America; und erhielt durch die heilge Taufe/den Namen [erased] Simon ist getauft worten den 17ten Tag/April im Jahr 1843 von dem Ehrw. Hrn./Para Denger Die Taufzeugen waren:/seine ÿltern

Ich bin getauft in deinem Namen,/Gott, Vater, Sohn und heil’ger Geist!/Ich bin gezählt zu deinem Saamen,

Zum Volk, das Dir geheiligt heißt./O! welch ein Glück ward da durch mein!/Herr, laß mich dessen würdig seyn!

Translation

Simon Otto 1843. Birth and Baptismal Certificate. To both of these spouses, Peter Otto and his legal wife Catharina a born Stutzmann is a son to the world born, the 4th Day of February in the year of our Lord, 184[3]. This is born in Lower Mahantango in Township Schuylkill County in the state of Pennsylvania in North America, and received through the holy Baptism the name Simon was baptized the 17th day of April in the year 1843 by the Reverend Mister Pastor[?] Denger. The baptismal sponsors were his parents.

William Otto is believed to be the scrivener of this piece. As he died in 1841, that would put the printing date of this edition earlier than Stopp’s estimate of 1843. This Taufschein is for Simon Otto, a great-grandson of artist Henrich Otto. It appears as if Simon’s name was written over another name that was erased. At least one other Taufscheine has survived for a sibling of Simon Otto, made for his sister Mary Otto, with the artwork thought to be done by William Otto and the infill by another hand. Stopp lists the date of this piece as 1837. It appears, however, that “184_” is printed on the original piece, which is also noted in Stopp’s list under this edition.
