Wann wir kaum gebohren werden/Ist vom ersten Lebenstritt/Bis zum kühlen Grab der Erden,/Nur ein kurzgemeß’ner Schritt./Ach! mit jedem Augenblick/Gehet unsre Kraft zurück;/Und wir sind mit jedem Jahre,/ Alle reif zur Todtenbahre.

O! wer weiß in welcher Stund,/Uns die letzte Stimme weckt;/Denn Gott hat’s mit seinem Munde,/Keinem Menschen noch endeckt./Wer sein Haus nun wohl bestellt/Geht mit Freuden aus der Welt:/Da die Sicherheit hingegen,/Ewig’s Sterben kann erregen.

Den Ehegatten/Johannes Miller/ und seiner Frau Juliän/eine geborne Petri/ist ein Sohn geboren worden den 15. Tag/März im Jahr unsers HErrn 1822/Dieser Sohn wurde geboren in Albanÿ/Taunschip Berks County,/im Staat Pennsÿlvania in Nord=Amerika, und wurde getauft am 10. Tag Maÿ im/Jahr unsers HErrn 1822 von dem Ehrw. Pastor G.F.T. Jäger und erhielt den Namen Isaack/Die Taufzeugen waren:/Jacob Petri u: seine Frau/Palli Zehner, und/conformirt von/Pfr. Jäger

Ich bin getauft! Ich steh’ im Bunde,/Durch meine Tauf’ mit meinem Gott!/So sprech ich stets mit frohem Munde,/In Kreuz, in Trübsal, Angst und Noth,/Ich bin getauft! des freu’ ich mich,/Die Freude bleibt mir ewiglich!

Ich bin getauft in Deinem Namen,/Gott, Vater, Sohn und heiliger Geist!/Ich bin gezählt zu Deinem Saamen,/Zum Volk, das Dir geheiligt heißt./O! welch’ ein Glück ward dadurch mein!/Herr, laß mich dessen würdig sein!

When we are just born…

To these spouses, Johannes Miller and his wife Juliän a born Petri is a son to the world born the 15th day of March in the year of our Lord 1822. This son was born in Albany Township Berks County, in the state of Pennsylvania in North America, and was baptized on the 10th day of May in the year of our Lord 1822 and by Reverend Pastor G.F.T. Jäger and received the name Isaack. The baptismal sponsors were Jacob Petri and his wife Palli [Polly] Zehner and confirmed by Pastor Jäger.

Comment

Note that “Pastor” is printed on the certificate instead of Pfarrer, even though the rest of the text of the certificate is in German. Later editions of printed Taufscheine include the large classically-robed angels seen here holding a scroll on which the information is recorded. Stopp, 1:225.
