Wenn wir kaum geboren werden/Ist, vom ersten Lebenstritt,/Bis zum kühlen Grab der Erden,/Nur ein kurzgemeß’ner Schritt./Ach! mit jedem Augenblick/Gehet uns’re Kraft zurück./Und wir sind mit jedem Jahre,/Allzureif zur Todtenbahre.

Geburts=und Tauf=Schein/Den Ehegatten/Seberius Stamm/und seiner Frau Elisabeth/eine geborne Franz/ist ein Kind geboren worden, den 2ten Tag/Jannuar im Jahr unsers Herrn 1869/Diese Tochter wurde geboren in Westbraunschweig/Towns. Schuilkil Caunty, im Staat Pennsylvania in/Nord Amerika; und wurde am 14ten Tag Februar/ im Jahr unsers Herrn 1869 von dem Ehrw./Pastor Johan Zuelch/getauft, und erhielt den Namen Elmeire/Prißille./Die Tauf=Zeugen waren:/Die Eltern

Ich bin Getauft ich steh’ im Bunde,/Durch meine Tauf mit meinem Gott!/So sprech ich stets mit frohem Munde,/In Kreuz, in Trübsal, Angst und Noth./Ich bin getauft, des freu’ ich mich,/Die Freude bleibt mir ewiglich.

Ich bin getauft, ob ich gleich sterbe,/Was schadet mir das kühle Grab?/Ich weiß mein Vaterland und Erbe,/Das ich bei Gott im Himmel hab’:/Nach meinem Tod ist mir bereit/Des Himmels Freud’ und Feyerkleid.

Birth and Baptismal Certificate. To these spouses, Seberius Stamm and his wife Elisabeth a born Franz was a child born, the 2nd day of January in the year of our Lord 1869. This daughter was born in West Braunschweig Township Schuylkill County, in the state of Pennsylvania in North America; and was on the 14th day of February in the year of our Lord 1869 by the Reverend Pastor Johan Zuelch baptized, and received the name Elmeire Prissille. The baptismal sponsors were the parents.

Comment

This is one of the rare fraktur on which a price is recorded. At the bottom, the scrivener wrote “Preis 35 Cent” followed by the note “Paid by Pastor Zülch.” Zülch was the pastor who performed the baptism and may have acted as an intermediary between the parents and scrivener.
