Comment

It is often the case that the imagery on fraktur does not seem to relate in any way to the text. This piece raises an interesting question. The mother’s maiden name is Löwenstein. In German, the word for lion is die Löwe. Although Friedrich Speyer did include lion motifs on other Taufscheine, could there be a connection in this piece of image and text, or was it simply a coincidence? The baptismal information was also left blank on this piece.
