Description
This image shows the rear view of the canvas satchel carried by AIM activist John Thomas during the Longest Walk demonstration in 1978. The case was used to carry documents collected during the march across the United States. Images on the case were painted by companions along the way.
This painting depicts seated American Indians near tipis and an animal skin. Above them are clouds containing the shapes of animals including a buffalo, horse and birds. Above the clouds is an American Indian in headdress holding a pipe producing smoke. Visible in the smoke is an animal skull, a pipe, and a silhouette of people marching with flags.
The initials "J. T." are stamped on the satchel.
