Description
This typed and annotated letter from CARD (Citizens for Alternatives to Radioactive Dumping), dated April 13, 1987 outlines strategies for stopping a proposed land withdrawal bill that would earmark land in New Mexico to be used as a dumping site for radioactive waste. The letter calls for more active engagement from citizens and urges them to contact representatives to voice concerns. Included are notes by an unknown author as well as contact information for senators and congressional representatives.

Bill # H. R. 2504
S. 1272
Vote down these bills as very dangerous to the Pecos and Rio Grande area unless they are amended with the stipulation that: EPA standards be complied with by DOE at WIPP certified by an independent agency. With no variances before waste is brought to the WIPP site. (After the waste is emplaced it will soon become impossible to retrieve).
Also, we in New Mexico and for the problems at the site need also the no high waste (spent fuel rods) stipulation and public hearings in New Mexico where the dissenting scientists can state their evidence regarding the danger to the Pecos River (and Rio Grande, etc.)
Possibilities: Aside from a small delegation of individual church members meeting with Congressmen (or their aides) these papers could be used as a flyer - reminders for people to call Oklahoma or Arizona (Morris Udall) Congressmen - by adding to them the address and phone number of the Congressmen and the Bill number to vote against / or amend with the strongest EPA standards to be complied with before the waste is put at WIPP - certified by an independent agency and no variances and public hearings so the scientists with this information may be heard (and no high level waste).
