My dear Mr. Innes:
I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 13th and its enclosure by which I am informed that the British subjects said to have been incarcerated at Bluefields have now been liberated and that the sending of a warship need not, therefore, be further considered.
You will recall that we informed you by telephone that our Consulate at Bluefields had telegraphed that the rumored idea of expelling the British Vice Consul was quite unfounded and also that the British subjects arrested had been set free. This information was received in response to telegraphic instructions based upon your memorandum of May 8th and reports which we ourselves had received from the Bluefields Steamship Company. I am glad to know that your own concern as to the present troubles at Bluefields is now at an end.
It may, however, interest you to know that we have found it advisable to send to Bluefields on board the Gunboat MARIETTA another consular officer, to assist in making an investigation and report and with the view, also, to doing what may be proper for the protection of American property, which it is alleged is being destroyed in spite of the fact that martial law has been put in force by the Nicaraguan Government.
I am, my dear Mr. Innes,
Yours sincerely,
[signature]
Mr. Alfred Mitchell Innes,
etc., etc., etc.,
