Project Description

After the disappearance of a young woman named Madeline Hepburn, Martin Wright is brought in for questioning. Wright is a stranger with a checkered past in a new town and an inclination for conversation. The story is formatted as a monologue as he tries to beat a polygraph test and get the detective off his trail. Using the beep of the polygraph test to interrupt Wright's monologue, Madeline Hepburn is Missing is a short story that experiments with style to convey the narrative.

A unique writing style is at the core of every writer. Their choice of diction, voice, and formatting shape an iconic identity for the page. In the fall of 2023, Madeline Hepburn is Missing was a short story submitted for a class. The assignment was to write a story under 600 words with the caveat that the story must be interrupted or diverted. Now in the summer of 2024, the piece has been extended into a 9,000-word story. Madeline Hepburn is Missing functions as a creative diagram of how style is maintained through the writing process. Additionally, the story highlights the process of accepting what must change for the story to continue.
