This book stack was created by a first-year student at Ursinus College participating in a Common Intellectual Experience event. After a group "Stacks on Stacks" activity in Fall 2024, students were invited to submit their own individual creations in Spring 2025.
The spine titles read: “The Birth of a Salesman,” “On Human Communication,” “Mutual Misunderstanding” and “The Meaning of Meaning.”
Student Statement
This poem talks about the difficulty of dealing with societal expectations and socialization. The intent is to bring to the forefront the idea of socialization as an act of advertising yourself as the version you feel others want you to be, and subsequently losing touch with yourself in that process. Instead of conversation as a way to build connection, you find yourself in a situation where you feel like not only the merchant but also the merchandise. It also talks about how people who have a harder time understanding social scenarios often carry the blame of misunderstanding the other person, but it is actually a two way street on which both people are misunderstanding the other.
