Physical Characteristics

Very tiny and smooth specimen that is shapped like a triangle. There are lines going down from the peak of the triangle.

Description

There are about 500 genera and about 2700 species of hydras. These animals are rarely fossilized. Some species of hydrozoans are freshwater, but majority of them are marine. There are also some that have a change of forms and switch from a polyp to a medusa figure. Hydras are mostly flexible figures, sometimes featuring a chitinous skeleton. Those with the chitinous skeleton have their first appearance in the Late Cretaceous. Hydroids are known to be colonial, but there are a few solitary species. New hydras are formed only by asexual budding on stems and stolons, which is connected to why majority of species are colonial.
