Comments

Volumes from the private library of the Reverend John Henry Augustus Bomberger (1817-1890), founder and first President of Ursinus College.

In 1856 Bomberger received Herzog's permission to translate and abridge the Real-Encyklopadie as Herzog himself continued its production. Assisted by twelve translators and associate editors, Bomberger produced the first volume in 1856 and the second in 1860 under the title, Protestant Theological and Ecclesiastical Encyclopedia.

The Civil War and general financial difficulties made it impossible for Bomberger to continue the work. His version of Herzog's work, however, was the initial step in the creation of the Schaff-Herzog encyclopedia.
