Description
Students created colorful glass projects in the interdisciplinary course "Form and Fusion: The Art and Science of Ceramics and Glass" at Ursinus College in Spring 2026. In this photo, student Catherine Stump's finished glass jellyfish piece is seen on the lawn of the campus. This piece was part of her group's larger "Ocean" themed project which was presented to the campus as part of the Celebration of Student Achievement on April 29, 2026.
Student Statement
For our final CoSA project, my group created 3D structures of sea creatures. We made the sea creatures in both translucent and opaque glass and hung them in a cube to capture both the scientific aspect of the glass as well as create an “ocean floor” feel to accentuate our creative drive. We worked together on the design and follow-through with our pieces, and it really pushed me to think about movement and flow of ceramics. I especially like the contrast between the “fluid” look of a jellyfish and the geometric patterns of both the glass and the 3D structure of the cube. Overall, the project made me more aware of how design choices can balance creative freedom and scientific constraint.
