Abstract
Fish mislabeling is a global concern with appreciable societal and ecological impacts. To that end, there is a need to spread awareness, clarify the extent of the issue, and inform legislative recourse and future actions. In this study, we isolated, purified, and amplified the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene from one sample of Wegman’s brand sushi King salmon tissue, then analyzed its gene sequence to determine its exact species. We found that the fillet was correctly labeled, evidenced by a 100% match to Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the BOLD database.
