Artist Statement

Everything is highly saturated, pulsating, and intense; a bearded dragon looms over the scene of a mountain, and a window floats above a figure's head. My process begins with collecting personal photographs which I collage into one cohesive image. When committed to paint, it transforms into a memoir of my life.

To capture intensity and visual unrest in my work, similar to one's mind being flooded with memories, I paint with oils straight from the tube rather than pre-mixing hues. My approach with this painting technique is influenced by the Fauvism movement, a period from 1905 to 1908 defined by vivid color and visible brushstrokes to depict emotion. I am particularly inspired by Fauvist painter Henri Matisse's usage of an experimental color palette. Along with working in oil on stretched canvas, I include materials such as yarn, fabric, glitter, and stained glass to add dimension and texture to my paintings.

I invite viewers to reflect on their own collection of memories - the connecting thread between conception and death - and consider what their own 'flashbang' before they die would look like. Where would they find solace? Through creating my work, I have discovered a warmth within my memories amassed before me that I did not fully appreciate before. As I reflect on past experiences, my acceptance of time passing grows; each fleeting minute has become another comforting moment gained, rather than lost.
