Artist Statement
This collection of work focuses on heightening the relationship between the subject and the viewer, toeing the line between intimacy and confrontation. I work with models in my photography so that I may pull from a reference or from memory in mediums like clay or graphite. When I am working directly with their forms and am puppeteering the body, I come closer to the emotional intimacy that comes with being on display and in front of a lens. Whether through their eyes or body language, I put the viewer in my shoes as the onlooker and they feel that vulnerability with the subject.
My work is focused on the body and the narrative it provides. I analyze form and shape, removing elements of the body that do not speak for the whole, making the viewer face only what they are given. This act of omission works the strongest in pieces depicting nudity where there is a society pull to avoid looking directly at the breast, for example, causing the eye to linger on the face. But when the piece is about the breast, the face only serves as a distraction, so I then make a bust of a bust and nothing more. No matter how the viewer approaches the multi-medium terrain of this collection, the body and onlooker are brought together and made to meet each other.
