Artist Statement
This semester, my work focuses on synesthesia, the disorder that heightens one sense in conjunction with another. Through music, I consume daily songs with contrasting depictions of love and romance. The goal of my work is to portray the vibrant images I see when I listen to music. I construct scenes in which all saturation is sucked out of the image except for the key color that I see. I achieve this by dressing the model, providing a prop, or applying makeup with the key color. I aim to connect with the audience and create an interactive experience where they are forced into my constructed narrative of a known song. I want to transport viewers and allow them to immerse themselves in a simple tune while being able to see and hear my thoughts. Visitors will put on headphones to listen to an instrumental track of the song while viewing a continuous loop of the images. Additionally, by repurposing older vinyl covers with my current photographs, I will instill the understanding that the visuals I created are the only possible interpretation. Music is a portal for the imagination. With my synesthesia, I can experience and revisit unknown, colorful worlds when I hear the tune. Through my peculiar photographs, I want visitors to experience the colorful worlds I see each time I listen to music.
