Artist Statement
Utilizing methods of collage, printmaking, and sculpture, I find the process of making art similar to how others use writing as a tool for consideration and clarification of ideas. Concepts of repetition and pattern, experiences of time and place, and the ways individuals actively alter and shape their environment are incorporated into the objects I make. I am also interested in exploring the distinction between craft and art to understand the role of functionality in distinguishing one from the other.
Fiber arts, including quilting, have historically fallen within the confines of “craft.” To examine the unwritten expectations of what a quilt is, I pair recognizable characteristics, including geometric shapes, patterns, and symmetry, with alternative materials such as paper and clay, to create non-textile quilt squares. The assembly of many parts to form a whole makes evident the importance of how one piece relates to others. Each relies on the shape and variation of its neighbor, whether any individual piece “fits” is the result of the interaction between many pieces. Making art offers a way to view an idea from multiple perspectives through the process of creating a physical object.
