Artist Statement
Tan, foam bubbles on the surface of a cup of coffee create an image of my iris. Small waves on the surface of water suggest the marks on my body. The veins in leaves evoke the palms of my hands. The texture of an orange’s skin is the same as my own. It is no mistake that we can see parts of ourselves in these details of the world. Seeing ourselves in these things that we find beautiful is comforting. It reassures me that I am alive, and that I am a being made up of little, beautiful things. But these things are only noticeable if we pay them mind. I focus on these tiny details and make them larger than life as one way to ensure that they are not forgotten in the bustle of the everyday. I also create a feeling of unease when these stunning, realistic details are juxtaposed with darker themes, and placed into unlikely contexts; further reassuring I am alive, and so are you.
