Artist Statement
Childhood is often romanticized as fun, innocent, and free. My work reckons with my desire to have experienced that childhood versus the one I lived through. I explore contradictions through text, image, materials, and process. In one work I affixed my great-great grandmother’s lace onto a canvas, and in others, I sewed textiles onto canvases and paper. Hand sewing is therapeutic for me, and I pay attention to each intentional stitch and mark. Soft textiles and imagery combine with sharp marks and needles forced through material to create a poetic irony.
