Artist Statement
Athletics and art are integral parts of my life, but they do not often crossover. However, they are both outlets for me and have greatly shaped me, in part, due to inspiring women in these respective areas. I find great importance in honoring and recognizing the women who shaped the landscape of history with their strength and shameless fight for equal opportunities. In my work, I often draw inspiration from my personal life and look at my teammates, friends, coaches, and mother. I reflect on moments when I have felt excited to be a woman, when I miss being a girl, and when I am sometimes not sure of either. I explore my own personal issues with body image and find solace in the notion that it is “just part of being a woman.” I explore these concepts in a two-dimensional way, and create movement with layering paper, color, textures, as well as graphite, and oil pastels. My use of layers is a reflection of the patchwork of emotions and feelings I have towards my subject matter. Together these elements create bold, fun, and energetic compositions that celebrate the dynamics of being a woman, the abundance of wonder that surrounds being a little girl, the beauty in aging, and the essence of female athletics past, present, and future.
