Artist Statement
My paintings and multi-media work explore dimension and duality. I study the distinctions of good and bad, lightness and darkness, childhood and adulthood, and calmness and chaos. I also investigate constructs of the self, identity, and our relationships to the physical and spiritual world. My work is like a puzzle with various entry points and pathways that invite the viewer to delve into these concepts for themselves.
When I begin to paint, I am typically a blank slate. I start by moving my arms and making different patterns, and as I move forward, I paint images. I often render various objects, symbols, and portraits, especially of women. I experiment with different materials, such as paint, wood, metal, glass, and cloth to create layers. Trying out new techniques and overlaying them helps me realize the vision of my artwork and grow as an artist.
I hope viewers approach my work with open mindedness, seeing many sides of what might appear to be a single artwork. I aim to intrigue and inspire the viewer to ask questions about what they see, what they feel, and reflect on their place in the world.
