Artist Statement
My experiences as a dancer have allowed me to escape and accept reality, and this notion inspires my work. On a stage, you see a dancer’s fluidity within movement and balance. Behind the scenes, there is pain and many obstacles mixed with intense emotion and feelings of euphoria. Dance inspires me to pose moments in time that elicit the malleability of the mind and body.
Through the sculptural process I cut, rip, and wrap material from dance shoes, clothing, silk fabric, and tulle which relate to dance and my life. When manipulating these materials, feelings of both excitement and nostalgia arise through the process as I am using them to create something while actively knowing that they can never be used again for their original purpose. When clothes, shoes, and fabric have passed their “expiration date” we often forget about them, but there is beauty in giving new life to old objects. My artistic practice, like dance, fulfills my inherent need to create visual imagery and allows me to process and redefine my experiences.
