Artist Statement
This past year I’ve had the privilege to travel, a long-anticipated release from the humdrum of school and work. From a field hockey trip to Canada, a marathon cross-country road trip with my brother, and winter break research in Costa Rica, these experiences have acted as pivotal moments of growth, and I can clearly link a moment of reflection or personal epiphany to a specific memory of a place. With this body of work, I represent these instants in time by capturing the very real ways they exist in the world, as well as the ways I’ve manipulated them as residents of my mind.
The ability to combine the clarity of reality and the dreamlike intrigue of surrealism has drawn me to artists like Salvador Dalí and Georgia O’Keeffe. New to me this year as sources of inspiration are the impressionist styles of Georges Seurat and Claude Monet, whose use of color and pattern link my interests in oil painting and the careful mark making of pen and ink. I think the overall mix of the real and creative thinking is the best way for me to walk the line between the literal and the imagined.
The pieces exhibited here represent just that–my thoughts, feelings, and major takeaways as I experience the world through my own lens.
