Artist Statement

One of the most mystifying physics concepts is that matter can exist between states or even in several states at once; this phenomenon is known as superposition. I think this very complex, disorienting phenomena is the best way I can describe my own identity. I don’t truly have a firm grasp on who I am as a person or what I even look like. My sense of self is always in a state of superposition.

My art is a reflection of this experience. I make paintings primarily, and I use oil paint because it's a very fluid medium. My identity is also fluid. In this way, the medium very much aligns with the perception I have of myself. I paint abstractly; many of the scenes that I paint don’t offer a firm ground. My paintings are intentionally murky to reflect how reality feels.

To put it bluntly, my paintings are a superimposed collection of everything and anything important I experienced at the time of painting them.

Much like how observable reality is describable in an undefined value of mathematical perspectives, so too are our perceptions and interpretations of the world in any given moment. I don’t think I could describe the exact state I was in when I made my work, but the work is a reflection of how intimately I have known the intense desire to create.
