Panel Text

Katie Cawley is a barista at the new Starbucks Café 2020 in the Schellhase Commons. Katie greets everyone with a gentle hello and ask how their day is going. They see the students at their most stressed, hungry, and tired but they continue to be a positive influence on everyone’s day because of their kindness. Their ability to recognize and remember names always amazes me. Becoming a barista was not their original path because the pandemic shifted their life path dramatically, but they are glad to work in a pandemic safe environment. Katie detailed that they had to move back home because they were sent home from their college. Due to the pandemic and unpredictable climate, they decided to take a year off from college to work full time. Before they worked at Ursinus, they were working at a grocery store but felt that the store was unsafe due to management not taking proper precautions against the pandemic. Feeling stressed and unsafe in their previous workplace, they decided to work as a barista here at Ursinus. They noted that they are “grateful to work somewhere where the pandemic is taken seriously” and also that they “feel safer” when compared with their previous grocery store job. With the full-time job here at Ursinus they were able to save up and move into their first apartment! They are very excited to have their own space. Katie also spends their free time thrifting CDs because they enjoy listening to them in the car. They are also considering transferring their credits to Ursinus to continue their undergraduate education, so be sure to look out for them on campus!
