Abstract

Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV? This essay will take you on a journey through the narrative of the base game, A Realm Reborn, and its first expansion, Heavensward, while dissecting various elements of the game’s portrayal of medieval elements. Join me on the quest of understanding how Final Fantasy XIV plays with our expectations of medievalism and the Middle Ages, why these elements can be considered medieval, and cultivate appreciation for video games as an applicable source of academic study.
