Abstract

NeuN, or Neuronal Nuclei, is a protein commonly used as a biomarker of neuron maturation, however, recent findings within the lab have found that expression of anti-NeuN varies, occurring only in select regions, and not always indicating neuron maturation. We have found cytoplasmic and some nuclear NeuN expression in the olfactory epithelium and olfactory bulb. The olfactory region is a highly compelling target as it is the only location within humans that neuron proliferation continues beyond early development. Continuations of this research will investigate NeuN expression throughout the maturation process of axolotls and further elucidate the expression of NeuN.
